Learn how to integrate ClickUp with Slack and set up notifications in a way that will help you maximize your internal communication and make sure every important task, due date, and conversation is properly recorded in ClickUp. Remember, if it’s not in ClickUp, it’s like it doesn’t exist!

How to integrate ClickUp with Slack:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click Integrations, then Add integration
  3. Click on Integrate Slack
  4. Add notifications to specific channels
  5. Hit save

Now that your ClickUp and Slack accounts are integrated, you can send a notification from ClickUp to Slack to remind your team of an important task, a status change, comments, attachments, or anything happening within a ClickUp task.

You can even send private tasks and your team will still receive a notification about it. Isn’t that neat?

It’s also possible to create a new task from Slack. Just type /clickupnew then type To do, and it’s going to prompt a message to create a new task. Click yes, and you can do anything you’d do in a regular ClickUp task: give it a title, description, assignees, due dates, etc.
Last but not least, if you send a message and click on the three dots, you can also create a task, attach a comment or save to ClickUp Notepad.

All right, Hi, I am Amalie with Systematic Excellence Consulting. And today I’m just gonna do a quick video, because I realized that in my past video I did the ClickUp and Slack integration, I went over that. But what I didn’t go over is what kinds of notifications you can set up it that will go from ClickUp to Slack.

Now, in the other video, I did go over how to create a task from inside of Slack. But now we’re going to talk about notifications from ClickUp to Slack, because I got the question on that video on a comment. And I wanted to respond with a video. And I thought if one person has a question about it, probably other people do too. So I’m going to go over that really quickly here.

So right now I’m in my settings, and I’m in the integrations. And as you can see here where it says add integration. So the first thing is you want to, you want to integrate Slack. Once you have that, then you can come over here and you can add notifications to specific channels.

So for example, let’s say I want to from our marketing YouTube, I want to send it to our task updates, let’s just say that’s where I want to go, that’s where I want to send it, then I can hit save on this. And then what it’ll let me do is now it’s going to send all of them.

So if I click on the types of notifications, I can choose which notifications I want to get. Is it task created, a status change, new comment, new attachment, assignee change? and then do I want it to include any private tasks, lists or folders, meaning if I have, let’s say, in my list I have all of the tasks are public for my whole team to see, but one task is private, having this toggled on will still send a notification to even though it’s private, it will still send that so if I don’t want it to send private, I’d want to turn that off, okay.

And then if you don’t want this on anymore, you can just remove the notification. So a use case for this would be if you have specific things that you want to get notified about, maybe it’s sales, maybe you track sales in ClickUp, or you want to know when a specific task is getting done.

If you want to make sure that your team is getting notifications about certain things, so you could set it up for them, if it’s a benefit for them, you could set it up that way too. So yes, you can set up from different list folders, you could get all of it.

So I could have everything from the client folder, any notifications from the client folder, go to a specific channel, so I could have that go to a specific channel. And if you update your channels in ClickUp, they will automatically, I’m sorry, in Slack, they’ll automatically update in ClickUp so that you can go change to different channels or whatever.

If you just want it to be a folder, you could just select one folder and get it so you can do it at the space folder or list level as far as the different notifications, and then you can choose your channel. And then once you hit save on this, then if you want to edit it, you can then edit it from there. So that is an easy way to get those notifications.

This will show you the different ways that you can utilize it inside of Slack. Now there is a note here that in order for Slack to unfurl the links in direct messages when you send them to your team, they need to also have this turned on in their workspace. So like each member will need to come into their workspace and do the integration with Slack up here in order for it to unfurl inside of direct messages when you’re sending it to them.

But you can see through this video here what it will look like if you send a notification. So you can do it by doing the slash Mark click up New to create a new task. And then you can assign the task, it’ll let you put a comment in a task. And I will show, really quickly actually, I’ll show. I think I need to switch my screen. Hold on one second here. Good, Slack opened. Okay.

Okay, so in Slack, if I do the ClickUp new, whoops, I spelled it wrong. If I do ClickUp new it’s going to ask me to do now I can create a task, so if I just typed in to do but now it’s it’s prompting me to I want to create a task. Now I can select from a list, so we’ll call it marketing, if I type in marketing, it’s going to come up, it’s going to pop up with whatever ones I have that are marketing or I can browse them.

So then I can create the task. So like task number one, I can add my description here task number one do this thing, I can add my assignees here, I can add my due date, I can select a priority and then I can hit Create. This isn’t assigned to anyone but this is it basically.

And then it’s asked me if I want to share that message to channel and then it’ll produce the ClickUp link to the actual task for me. And then I can change settings there. That will open up the settings inside of ClickUp. If I click on the settings, or if I get help, if I cancel this if I don’t want that. But now this task is created. If I copy link, just come over here.

And I paste it, it’ll actually open up the task in the browser for me. I don’t have that screen shared. So you can’t see it. Let me see if I can share back to that window. Okay. All right, let me switch back really quick. There we go.

Okay, so now you can see that it opened up this new task for me, that was the one that I created, and it pulled it over there. So that makes it really helpful, you can create tasks right from Slack, I do want to go right back into Slack really quickly, because I wanted to show one more thing here.

Okay, so in here, let’s say we’re typing a message. Really important. And then let’s say I send that, and I want to click here, I just click on the three dots, and it’ll tell me that I can create a task, attach a comment or save to Notepad. And which is really awesome. So if I want to create a task, I would just say create task, let’s say I don’t want to do that. But I actually want to attach a comment, I do that now it’s gonna say I will, I can choose a task from your task tray. So like I keep some tasks in my task tray for the ones that I’m working on, or focused on.

And so I can do that, or I can select another task. And let’s call it to do, it’ll open up a task, and then I can select the workspace and it’ll actually add the comment to the task for me. So that’s just a couple of options as far as how to utilize the integration and notifications between ClickUp and Slack. I was trying to say Slack-ClickUp, I guess I was trying to say it together.

But anyway, I think it’s great because a lot of times if we’re in Slack, we may get caught up in messaging with someone and realize, “Oh, my gosh, this really needs to be a task.” And all we do is just click on the three dots, create a task from it, it’ll pop, it’ll take everything in that message and put it into the description of the task for us. So we don’t lose any piece of that conversation that we had in slack.

So for us, it’s basically, the baseline is if it’s not in ClickUp, it doesn’t exist. It’s not treated as a task or an actionable item, if it’s not in ClickUp. So it’s really important that we make sure that whatever conversation happens in Slack, if it doesn’t already have a task, it needs to have a task created which we can do right from Slack.

And then if it’s a comment or something adding onto a task that’s already created, we would just want to add it as a comment to make it easier for everyone to stay on the same page and know what we’re talking about.

So I hope that was helpful. And if you have any other questions about it please let me know in the comment. There is a link to book a call if you’re looking for additional support. We also have a link to buy us a coffee so this is all free content that we put out and any support helps.
